During a recent family getaway, I had the pleasure of delving into Michael E. Gerber's Beyond the E-Myth, the third instalment in his E-Myth series. Gerber skilfully guides readers through the journey from idea conception to business establishment and growth. Among the plethora of insightful concepts in the book, one in particular resonated with me - the notion of an entrepreneurial seizure.
Entrepreneurs often begin as technicians in a specific trade and are individuals daring enough to venture into starting their own businesses (present company included). They harbour an idea linked to their craft but lack the business acumen needed to transform it into a successful venture. Despite the absence of formal training, these risk-takers embark on the journey, driven by the belief that their idea can revolutionise their industry for the better (me again 😅). But then the seizure hits and it is too late to go back but you also don't know how to move forward, hence you get stuck in a stressful, sleepless, time poor limbo.
The majority of allied health businesses are born from technicians transitioning into entrepreneurs. Initially fuelled by adrenaline and determination, these ventures take flight only to find themselves trapped in a cycle of dependency on their creators. Breaking free from this cycle seems daunting, with many businesses succumbing to closure within their first year (40%) or first five years (80%).
